PAINTING WITH WORDS

By Norah Wilson
(the Wilson in Wilson Doherty)

If you’re a regular visitor, you will know that Heather and I are writing partners. Together we form Wilson Doherty, authors of young adult paranormal stories. You may also have figured out that with my background as a romance writer, I’m the one who is always campaigning for the romance thread in our stories. And when I see a photograph like the one below, I think, “There! That’s what I’m trying to do!”

This particular photograph entitled “Dishes” was taken by a talented photographer on Deviant Art who goes by the name Create-Destroy. How long did it take him, I wonder, to capture this shot? How did he go beyond light and shadow and two bodies to imbue this photograph with such tenderness, such poignant sweetness?

Frankly, I don’t know the artist and I haven’t a clue how he did it. But I do know what it takes to paint this kind of a picture with words. It takes patience. Advance and retreat. Obstacles and tests and disappointments and triumphs. And anywhere from 60,000 – 90,000 words. And when we’re done, I can only hope we’ve created some moments that are as piercingly sweet as this one.
