WE MADE THESE CANDLES OUR OWN
I picked up this so-plain looking candle holder at a thrift store (price tag: $1) a few weeks back. Two basic pieces: an open glass tube with three tea light-size indentations, and the wooden holder it rests in. What a great find! This candle holder is perfect for customizing decorations, drawing energy in, or celebrating uniquely. I can't wait until Christmas when I add some glittery stars, tiny bulbs and maybe a couple tags and little bows in there before I light my red and green candles. And hey, what if someone wanted to celebrate the fall? A few small, colorful leaves, some acorns and pine needles would be ideal. Add orange candles (ones that smell like pumpkin pie) – and you've got yourself a beautiful fall centerpiece! Have a special wish or prayer? Why not write it secretly on a piece of paper, slip it in here, and send it out into the universe while the candles burn above?
Norah and I had great fun with this holder last weekend. We got together at her place for our plotting work, and later in the evening to watch History channel's Witch Hunt on DVD. (Disturbing material, to be sure, but great stuff to feed our imaginations!) So anyway, I packed up this holder and a bunch of tea lights, and we put our minds to work. Here's what we came up with. Oh by the way, in choosing which candle colors we used, Norah and I looked at a few on-line resources on psychology of color, but mostly we just selected the candles that felt right for us, for each display. (Personally, what I feel about a color trumps what anyone else tells me I should feel about it.)
Money...
We filled the tube with coins! Okay, pretty simple I guess. (But actually, though you can't see it in the pic, not so simple – almost every one of these coins is a 1973 quarter with a Mountie on it instead of the usual caribou.) There are a couple toonies in there too – $2 bi-metallic coins. We chose green candles, as green if often a color associated with abundance and financial gain.
Love...
Norah added the rose buds from her garden – the perfect touch! The colorful stones you see in the picture are little heart-shaped charms. I've had them for years and years and never strung a one of them onto a chain to wear. But they seemed perfect for a candle display if one were wishing to draw love into their lives. The colors of the candles here, of course, represents passion. (These are a little more orangey than I would have liked, but we didn’t have a true red.)
Luck...
Six white dice, trinkets from a craft store in the shapes of shamrocks, horseshoes and wishbones. The tiny black dice are actually earrings I bought for myself (but have yet to wear). For this one, we chose two green candles (abundance) and a lovely blue that felt lucky. I love this display and find it aesthetically pleasing. And can't you just feel the energy pouring in here? And how lucky do you think those earrings will be now? Can't wait to wear them!
For the love of stones...
And for health (I believe all six stones here deal with some aspect of health, physical or emotional), this is a simple but pretty arrangement. And the candles we chose? Not just with candles, but for many things, the calming color blue is associated with health. White for me – and in many resources I've consulted on candle burning – is symbolic of the spiritual. Finally green, in this instance, is used to symbolize earth, or grounding.
You know, this could really even be used as a portable 'alter'. A bring-with-me place for centering oneself when away from home. I can see using it with prayer or meditation, or just for creating that wonderful quiet and still time. Oh, how a person could make this their own! Bring their own personal symbols, treasures from their lives, with them wherever they went.
Well, of course Norah and I did one for ourselves – for the Wilson Doherty writer team. Something of hers and something of mine along with a little item that meant something huge for both of us. We agreed (very readily) on the candles and burned them while we watched our DVD and chatted away. So there ... good vibes out to the universe indeed!
