BEAUTIFUL CREATURES INDEED

For our first book review, I picked BEAUTIFUL CREATURES, by Kami Garcia and Maragret Stohl. And yeah, one of the reasons I picked it was because it was written by a writing team.

 Beautiful Creatures cover

From the inside flap: Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she’s struggling to conceal her power and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps, and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.

Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town’s oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.

In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.

I was really looking forward to this book, thanks to a lot of buzz, and I can’t say I was disappointed. I loved that it was told through the POV of the teenage boy as opposed to the girl. Though I loved Lena’s character and loved the necklace she rocked (she made charms out of everyday objects that had sentimental value for her and added them to her necklace). I also loved the Southern Gothic atmospheric tone of the book. But most of all, I loved the uniqueness of the paranormal element. I won’t say too much about that, as I don’t want to throw any spoilers out there (particularly for my writing partner, who hasn’t read this book yet!).  But unique paranormal elements is sort of our forte, so I’m guessing Heather will like it too. Maybe she’ll come back here and add her comments when she’s read it.

If you check out other reviews for this book, the biggest knock you’ll find is that some people found it too long. But I didn’t have that problem. Well, mostly I didn’t. There was one section that struck me as more about the research (Civil War) than advancing the plot. But on the whole, I didn’t mind the slower pace. I thought it suited the atmosphere of the story, sort of like steeping a good old-fashioned ice tea.

So, have you read BEAUTIFUL CREATURES? Want to weigh in on it?
