MOVIE REVIEW-ISH - THE WICKER MAN/RIFF TRAX

Do you know The Wicker Man? You don’t? Well … good for you. I’m not talking about the 1973 original (which I've never seen), I’m talking about the 2006 remake. I’ve seen it three times now. Okay, for those of you who have seen the movie yourselves and are now shaking your heads, rolling your eyes skyward and mumbling, "Why, why, why?", let me explain.

Wicker Man Movie

I always cheer for Nicholas Cage. That's right, people, I'm a FAN. He really is a fine actor, and I just like his looks, I guess. The feel of him on the big screen, seems … right. He belongs there. He kicked ass in Kick-Ass (bet that’s never been used before), and I loved him in Con Air. But in The Wicker Man … okay, I wasn’t exactly cheering Cage on in this one. I was cheering for the creepy-cult village people. Ah, heck I was cheering for the bees!

Norah and I saw this movie in the theatre when it first came out. I can still see the complete look of WTF written all over her face as the credits started rolling (she claims to have seen a similar one on mine). When The Wicker Man came out on DVD, I bit the bullet, and watched it with my oldest son, Brandon. He’d not had the big-screen experience. It wasn't any better on the small screen. Sooooo ... twice not enough? Why, oh why, would I see the movie a third time this past weekend? (Besides the fact that three is my absolute favorite number for its symbolic qualities -- stay tuned for future blogs on that). Well, Brandon and I watched The Wicker Man again, but with RiffTrax playing in the background.

Snicker ... snort ... laughed my freaking ass off.

RiffTrax is a group of writers/performers who make hysterical audio commentaries to play over the movies. We've downloaded a couple now and I am absolutely looking forward to viewing the riffed Plan Nine From Outer Space in the near future. RiffTrax has a certain sense of humor that really strikes home with me. Sarcastic? Okay. Smart-assed? Oh yeah. Mocking? Totally! These guys are funny. So funny that if they were seated behind you in the theatre engaging in their wisecracking banter and sound effects, you probably wouldn't even ping your popcorn at them or shoot an evil-eyed glare their way.

So … do you know The Wicker Man, The Wicker Man, The Wicker Man? (I shall stop now as I seem to be breaking into song.) Well, if you don’t, and you think you might want to, I’d recommend watching it along with RiffTrax. Hey, if you do watch it, send me a line... let me know what you think.
