BOOK REVIEW: Charlie St. Cloud

by Heather the Jane

Darn, missed the movie. This was one I really meant to see, but never seemed to make it to the theatre. (Actually, I did make it to the theatre lots over the summer, just never to this movie. But hey, I saw Despicable Me FOUR TIMES with youngest son, Conor – not even kidding.) Anyway, being a self-proclaimed book nut, I picked up a copy of Ben Sherwood's Charlie St. Cloud. Hey, why watch the movie when I can read the book? Let the images come to life in my own imagination? Let the magic flow through the world of the words on the page?

CHRISTMAS? BAH HUMBUG!

by Norah Wilson

Okay, here’s where Heather and I diverge. I’m kind of a scrooge.

I grew up loving Christmas. And I really, really loved it when our kids were little. Watching them open their gifts was the best! But please, does it have to be a two month, mall-crawling, tinsel-strewn spend-a-thon? Barely has the Halloween stuff been packed away and the Christmas stuff is in our faces and Christmas musak is piping through the speakers in the ceiling. Is just want to find the manager and say, “Dude, seriously? It’s November 1st!”

ONLY 48 MORE SLEEPS!

by Heather the Jane

Oh yeah ... Christmas is coming. I'm big-time into it already. I'm one of those overly enthusiastic/slightly annoying people who start bouncing around in mid-October singing Jingle Bells (oh, or Jingle Bell Rock – there, I'm cool again). I usually buy some little thing every Boxing Day for the next Christmas, just so I can feel like I have a start on it. Yep, I love the Christmas music, the whole spirit of Christmas, dinner at my sister's home, watching my family open their presents, calls to my brother's family in Nova Scotia, outings with friends, putting up the tree....

BETTER INTENTION GROUP, FREDERICTON

by Heather and Norah

We've found a wonderful group! The Better Intention Group Fredericton (BIG, for short) meets weekly (sometimes in a haunted house!). Lots of insight, great discussions, incredibly interesting people.

From the website: "The Better Intention Group (BIG) meetings is for people who are intending to make their lives better through fun, thought-provoking, "ah-ha!", unusual, new and interesting topics and conversations in a group of like minded folk. It's for those who have an interest and desire to talk and discuss issues related to a variety of spiritual, alternative and non-mainstream topics."

Here's a link to the group's new website. Check it out!

THE LOST SYMBOL (I FINALLY FINISHED IT!)

by Heather the Jane.

Well, it's not a YA novel, but let me indulge all the same by offering this review.

I have now read every Dan Brown novel out there. My favorite remains, Deception Point (that particular doorstopper I read in just two days), with Angels and Demons coming in at a close second. But I must say, I really, really enjoyed The Lost Symbol too. I definitely recommend it. Yes, I know, it came out months ago, so I'm behind the rest of the world (boo-hiss, me) in reading it. In truth, I was saving this one. You know – this is going to be so great! – saving it. I mean, it's been six years since his last book!
