You know, modern horror movies have their advantages. Not the least of which is modern special effects. I'll admit, sometimes the chilling scenes in the oldies can look a little, well – cheesy. But, hello from 2011 – you expect that going in. It's part of the charm, if not part of the fright. But maybe that takes the 'fright' to a deeper level? Maybe it allows us to better appreciate the madness of the story? The profound skill of the actors involved? Show us your fear. Catch us in your descent. Let us hang our heads with your grief.  Keep us riveted to the fiction, despite the lack of more realistic-looking effects....

What a way to start the new year! A congratulatory shout out to my husband, Harold Doherty.

Okay, after a busy-time-of-year hiatus, we’re back! That’s right – Wilson Doherty are blogging again. Which means there will be more book reviews, movie reviews (flashbacks and Rifftrax included), thoughts on the writing process, our respective takes on music, tales of things that niggle and nudge, and other cool stuff.  Oh, and great news from our writing lives. We’re counting on it!

Well, as of the last time I looked (2010-11-20) there are 233 results showing when I did a ‘haunted doll’ search on eBay Canada. Some hits are of posters or photos, there are a few voodoo kids, and, of course, many actual dolls.  Some of these dolls are quite creepy looking, others not so much. And some, truly, just look so sad to me (in an ‘I want my mommy’ kind of way).

Here’s a cool clip I found on Youtube the other day. Yes, I know, there are fakes on the internet. But there really appears to be some kind of energy these animals have to be feeling off this doll. Check it out.

Any fans of the TV show Supernatural out there? If you've been following this season, you'll know that Sam came back from hell "wrong", in Dean's words. He was pulled out of the pit and he's been hunting with his maternal grampa, Samuel Campbell (who was pulled down from heaven the same time Sam was raised) and the extended Campbell family. What Sam has been desperately trying to hide from his brother is that he came back without his soul. He has the same body, the same skills, and all the same memories, but he's so not Sam. This CW promotional poster pretty much says it all, Dean with the halo of light behind him, Sam with the serpent.
